Term: Semi-permanent

Rate: £25 ph

Place of work: WFH / remote

Hours: At least 10 hours a week with flexibility up to 20, depending on project demand.

Contractor: Area Dean / Parochial Church Councils [PCC] / Wotton Deanery

Line Manager: Area Dean / Vicar [the same person]

Role Overview

This role will be instrumental in developing and implementing the mission and ministry, initially in the church and parish communities of Slimbridge, Lower Cam, and Coaley, and, potentially, in additional parishes in the coming months and years.

  • Develop and provide operational support for our mission and ministry as our church communities reconnect with the wider parish community.
  • Coordinate and consolidate operational and administrative workload across the parishes.
  • Be a central communication point across the parishes, representative with partner organisations and groups, and with College Green departments and Church House.
  • Develop fundraising and income generation opportunities.
  • Work across parish boundaries on both inherited and future projects.

Key Responsibilities

Parish / Benefice Administration

  • Working with the vicar and PCCs to support change, embed new initiatives, and encourage appropriate engagement.
  • Design, implement and manage communications systems for amongst, between and to church and parish communities, including
    • parish contact management and GDPR compliance.
    • producing and maintaining group mailings, church websites, social media, monthly calendars, parish magazine, service sheets and publicity as needed.
  • Maintaining the benefice diary and coordinating benefice and parish meetings as needed.
  • Managing and coordinating our Life Events from enquiry to service.
  • Pre- and post-meeting comms for Standing Committees, PCCs, subgroups and ad hoc events.
  • Collaborating, as needed, with Parish Officers: churchwardens, treasurers and secretaries.
 
Parish / Benefice Operations
  • Implementing and delivering parish-based mission and ministry projects, including re-ordering [building projects], providing a benefice-wide view and consolidating resources and delivery.
  • Liaising with partners and stakeholders within the parish and wider communities.
  • Collaborating with diocesan office holders and departments as needed, including applying for faculties and permissions as needed.
  • Fundraising and grant applications for said mission and ministry projects as above, including researching and liaising with funding bodies.
  • Working with the Vicar and PCCs on parish operations and projects as needed, providing implementation and delivery, seeing these through to completion and providing ongoing management as needed.

Vicar’s PA

  • Working with the Vicar to coordinate diary, triage emails and appointments as needed.

Structures and Support

This role will work with these existing structures.

Diocese

  • The diocese provides significant resources and structures to aid local parish churches and their officers around buildings, mission and ministry.
  • Liaising appropriately with key diocesan officers and staff will provide both support and guidance for many aspects of this role.

Deanery

The area dean [who is currently also our vicar] and lay chair will oversee the Wotton Deanery.

Benefice

  • The incumbent [vicar] will be the line manager and provide day-to-day support and contact.

Parishes

  • Each parish is governed by their PCC [effectively trustees of the local church, which is an exempt charity].
  • Each parish may have two churchwarden posts and a PCC Treasurer.
  • Collaborative and working relationships are essential with each of these groups and roles.

Church Communities [congregations]

  • Within each parish, there are typically several church communities. The most notable are those who gather on a Sunday morning in the church building. Others include Soup Lunches, Coffee Mornings, Coffee and Company, Art with Heart, and Families at St Bart’s.
  • Each of these communities and groups have their own volunteer leaders. This role will have a collaborative working relationship with each of these communities and groups.

Other stakeholders and partners.

  • There are significant partners in each of the parishes. Some of these are organisations in their own right, such as GL11, and others are volunteer-led groups, either locally owned or part of a regional or national program, for example, Brownies.

  • Excellent working knowledge of computer packages, Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent written (word processing) and verbal communication skills
  • Concern about the details and to see things through to completion.
  • The ability to work under pressure, prioritising as necessary and taking on new systems and processes quickly.
  • Knowing when to seek help and advice.

Desirable

  • Tech-savvy, with the ability to use existing tools to do new jobs and find new tools where needed.
  • Content management on websites and social media platforms.
  • Data management tools.
  • Abode Creative Suite.
